Paintings

Restoration of paintings comprises numerous procedures in conservation treatment: facing, consolidation, removal over painting, filling, relining, in-painting, smoothing, dwelling, varnish rejuvenation, etc. It is necessary to observe certain rules and codes adopted in restoration worldwide. Like in building a house, it is impossible to "skip" important essential phases and get straight to "cleaning". Many owners of art collections believe, that you can just "clean" a painting, an icon or a mural without facing and consolidation of both the paint layer and the support.

An artifact is a valuable object not only in terms of artistic or historical value, but also in terms of monetary value. It is essential that every law of restoration is observed, so that no damage is brought to an artifact.

Explanation of all the procedures, rules and laws of conservation and restoration would take a specific course, so we would limit ourselves to just one example. When we are looking at a partial loss of paint layer as a result of flaking, chipping or tear, it is eventually necessary to in paint, or "touch up" the areas of loss, so that to match the surrounding original paint layer. Prior to that the area is filled with conservation filler, smoothed, primed and then "touched up". It very important that the surrounding original paint layer is not overpainted.

Torn canvas with lost areas. The loss is filled and primed. After in-painting inside the limits of actual loss.

It is nonetheless important that one of the principles of conservation and restoration (reversibility) is observed, so that any treatment has to be not only harmless, but at any point reversible.

Icons

Holy images painted with either egg tempera, or other paints on wood boards or other supports - are a different realm of restoration. Severity of damages differs from icon to icon. However, it is possible to deal even with the most complicated cases - like fire damage.

Murals

If a mural painting is executed right on the stucco (surface layer of plaster), - even in that case it is possible not only to restore, but even to remove it from the wall. In case the mural is painted on canvas affixed on a wall, it is possible to restore it "in situ" (like it is shown in the video "Houses Around Here"), or remove it from the support (the wall) and restore in a studio (as it was in the St Mary German Church in McKeesport, PA).

Stain-glass

With stain glass projects it is possible not only restore and repair (lead cames or broken pieces replacement), but also to replicate, as follows:

There were two identical stain-glass projects in two adjacent houses.

One was partly stolen, partly vandalized.

Using the stained glass in the house next door, the project was recreated.

Additionally, our company can customize virtually any stain-glass project according to the fantasy of our customers. It is essential to stress the fact, that with stain-glass the most important thing is to pick the right kind of glass observing its artistic compatibility and visual impact. The approach is very similar to jewelry making.
